Name: Matt Mahoney
Why do you train BJJ?: I train BJJ because of its proven self defense effectiveness and it’s challenge as a sport. BJJ is constantly improving and evolving, which in turn requires the practitioner to be constantly improving and evolving regardless of rank or level. BJJ is truly a system that requires just as much (if not more) mental engagement as it does physical. Aside from the physical benefits, health benefits, and practical application, training has forced me to look inward constantly and grow as a person. All that aside, BJJ is fun, has allowed me to create some of the best friendships I could ask for, while allowing me to
Connect and find a mat to train on anywhere I travel.
Why do you enjoy coaching?: I have been a coach in several aspects of life for the past 17 years. Whether it be sports, business, or martial arts, coaching has allowed me to grow tremendously as an individual, while providing an opportunity to give back in a way that provides a path toward success for others, which is the ultimate reward.
What can your students learn from doing BJJ beyond just martial arts skills?: Through my approach to teaching BJJ, students can apply the same mental process involved in addressing complex issues and situations by breaking them down into their simplest form. This mind and skill set can be applied anywhere, whether it be school, the workplace, or in day to day interactions with other people.
